The 3rd grader students who are T.A.'s and T.K.'s in room 213, were challenged to explore and learn more about Byte and how to code it. After the T.A.'s and T.K.'s learned more about Byte, they had the responsibility of teaching the basics of Byte to the whole class. Next week, the T.A.'s and T.K.'s will begin introducing Byte to small groups of students, so all will have the opportunity to begin coding and writing sequences for Byte.
4th grade students have been learning about the computer science and what programmers do, how they create software and code devices. Soon, students will be working in smalls groups to begin coding and writing sequences for Byte on the iPad.
This week student's met Byte, our classroom robot. We are able attain Byte thanks to the generous donators who helped my donor's choose grant get funded. Students were so fascinated to interact with Byte, we decided to see what questions we had about robots and record them on our question corner. The main questions we have are:
1. How can robots move/run? 2. What do robots do? Students had some more questions we hopefully can find the answers to once we explore Byte, and all it's capabilities! Students are working on being efficient typers, and with that will begin to take a timed typing test. Students have been given the challenge of working their way to earning "Official Moosketeer Typing Star" once they are able type 60+ W.P.M. As student's progress towards being a typing star, they will be able to track their progress and they continue to try and beat their best typing score.
Students have been working on completing level 1 on Dance Mat Typing. Students are working towards gaining proficient typing skills. Dance Mat Typing gives the students a fun and engaging way to learn the keyboard.
Third graders took a break from creating projects for our class studio to listen to the book "When Charlie McButton Lost Power". The students loved listening to the anxiety Charlie felt when he was without technology, and how important it is to unplug once in a while. Charlie begrudgingly has to play with his sister, and realizes, even after power came back to his gadgets, he enjoyed the break from his screens, and will continue to take self selected breaks to play with his sister. Even though technology enhances all our lives greatly, it doesn't replace the human interaction we all need to have and continue to build social and interpersonal relationships. 3rd and 4th graders were introduced to creating and coding their very own characters in the class' Scratch studio. Student's had a great time coding the background, characters, and sound to make their own unique project.
4th graders have been reviewing using blocks of code to reprogram other games and videos created by students on Scratch, which is an online program developed by MIT before given the task of creating their own studio.
